Low Income Energy Assistance Program

The largest of our energy programs is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or “LIHEAP”. LIHEAP is designed to help income-eligible households pay for fuel or other winter energy services. LIHEAP provides a one-time benefit; the amount of the benefit is determined by the household size, income, and type of heating fuel.

You do not need to bring a past-due bill or disconnection notice to apply, and you may be eligible even if you rent your home. Even if heat is included in your rent, you may still be eligible for assistance. Assistance is available for natural gas, propane, kerosene, wood or wood pellets, heating oil, and electricity. Payments are made directly to your fuel vendor.

Applications for LIHEAP are taken from September 14th through May 2nd at locations throughout York County. If you are homebound, a staff person will come to you.

To schedule your LIHEAP appointment, you may call Energy Services at (207) 324-5762, and select Option 8, or (toll-free in York County), 1(800)-965-5762, and select Option 8. You may also schedule your appointment online between September 14th and May 2nd. You must make an appointment to submit your LIHEAP application.

If you are unable to make it to your scheduled appointment, please call Energy Services at the earliest opportunity so that we may reschedule you and offer the time slot to someone else.
