A Guide to Maine Property Taxes
Taxes too high? Consider the following:
(Remember that all applications must be made before April 1st!)
Exemptions decrease your assessment by a set amount. Multiply this amount by the tax rate to calculate your yearly savings. Once approved, an exemption is permanent till you move or sell your property. The total value of exemptions you receive shows up on the “Exemption” line on your tax bill.

- Homestead Exemption – 2016-17: $15,000
You must have lived at the residence for at least a year on April 1st. You may only have 1 Homestead exemption nationwide. Starting with the Fall 2017 Tax Bills, the Homestead exemption’s value will be increased to $20,000.

- U.S. Veteran’s Exemption – $6,000
You must have served in the U.S. Military in an active wartime period, and be either at least 62 years of age or be classified as 100% disabled due to a service-related condition. Un-remarried widows and widowers of servicemen and women may also apply. Each owner who qualifies may apply separately.

- Blind Exemption – $4,000
To receive a Blind Exemption, you must have been declared blind by a physician. Each owner who is blind may apply separately.

Current Use Programs
These programs affect your Land value only. You choose specific, mapped parts of your property to enroll and the enrolled acreage is assessed at a lower than normal rate. Each program places restrictions on what you can do with your property and removing your property from these programs incurs a stiff monetary fine, so consider carefully before applying.
